SPG Evolution
In 1983 and 1984 Saab was testing its new 16-valve turbo engine. As Saab was testing it's new engine they were also "testing" something new for the Saab customers. Depending where your from there are a few names for it. The US called it the SPG or Special Perforance Group, Europe called it the Aero, and the UK called it the Saab 900 T16S. No matter what it was called the car was easily distinguished by the body cladding and 3-spoke wheels. The SPG also offered standard fog lamps, leather interior, sway bars, electric sunroof, and badge free (US) except for the Saab logo. The SPG was introduced to the public in 1985 and in the years to follow would be updated until the program ended after 1991. This list will hopefully shed some light on the evolution of the SPG over the 7 years of production. If i've forgotten anything or misrepresented anything please email me with the correct information. Here is a photo of an early prototype Aero/SPG. This one has the 16x6.5 Aero wheels, whaletail (never offered factory on US models), air vent covers, and you can't notice it here but it has a Colorado Red Leather interior (never offered on US models).
Compiled US SPG Spec List
Through searching around and asking a few ?'s to my best Saab shop I gathered a little info on SPG's and there jaunt into the USA. I have found out that 7,625 SPG were imported from 1985 to 1991. Here is the list of specs i've aquired.
NOTE: All SPG's were always badgeless except for the "SAAB" with the Griffen,
3 spoke wheels, body cladding kit, and on 1987+ SPG's the suspension upgrades.

There were subtle upgrades along the way as the SPG's evolved. They always had gas shocks and sway bars but starting in 1987 they got a tighter lowered suspension stance aka the Saab Roadhandling Kit. This suspension setup was also an available option on Saab 900 models. In 88 the wheel arches got flared slightly and the hubs/brakes system was upgraded to what the 9000's used. You could now bolt on the 16" Aero or Super Aero wheels. Also, in 1988 the SPG got a Garrett H20 cooled turbocharger. In 1990 the SPG got yet another upgraded turbo in the way of a Mitsubishi TE-05. Finally, in 1988 it looks like a leather shift boot and a leather 3 spoke steering wheel were added to the mix.
